Naveta’s newest paintings - winter of 2022
This past winter, 2022, I again went to Naples, Florida. This after missing going in 2021 because of Covid. - There are certain things I like about this place . . . . the thrift shops, the wonderful and incredibly diversified restaurants, and the sun; that is, when it’s not too hot or too humid. Then, there are the things I don’t care for like the traffic, the crowds, the snakes (well, there’s not a lot of them where I go anyway). And, the prevailing politics.
So, this year for my time in Florida I’d decided I wouldn’t take workshops, which I’d done for many previous years. What I’d do this winter was experiment with my art . . . . stretch myself . . . . dare to do just about anything.
I’d spent the winter of 2021 watching abstract art videos on YouTube, and I’d found a couple of artists that I loved, so during this past winter I thought I’d use these exciting artists to inspire my work. Well, I did that, and people liked the pictures, but they didn’t grab me, excite me, please me . . .
Then one day I was using my second canvas to wipe excess paint off my brushes and palette knives (I always paint with a second canvas set up on a second easel) and while working on the primary picture, I “off-load” paint onto this other canvas. I just smear it on, and sometimes I’ve found that the second canvas is actually more interesting than the primary one. This is because I’m “smearing” in a totally intuitive (abstract) way, and the colors are the same as the principle canvas.
I’ve heard many art instructors warning their studen I’m trying to explain how I came to paint the FAT BOTTOM GIRLS pictures. Off-loading paint (getting ride of excess paint on my palette, brushes, and knives). I do this in order to avoid flushing paint into the drains and pipes which can cause problems. So, that’s how this series started. I really liked what I saw smeared with wild abandon on the second canvas, so I really let loose and sketched some really loose lines on this colorful background . . . . And, lo and behold, it looked like I’d drawn a female shape . . . . And, I liked what I’d done. . . . . So, that is how the FAT BOTTO GIRLS series started.
Still more work to do to get this page done . . . . But I’m going to go ahead and post it anyway partially done. The new pictures are done, but the descriptions not so much. I’ll do them the next rainy day . . . . .
