We are now closed for the winter opening again June 1st

WHAT I DID THIS WINTER . . . .

Totally new for me, and all due to the encouragement of my fellow artist here at Old Barn Galleries, Rodney Tate. Rodney is fast becoming a noted wildlife photographer specializing in local animals and birds. — So, for the last year or so, Rodney has repeatedly said to me . . . “Why don’t you paint your gardens?” And I said . . . “I don’t have any idea how to paint flowers. But, as they say . . . “If you can dream it, you can do it, and I did. Hope you like them. I painted them while visiting my sister down in Florida for a few months. Most of the people I know down there are quite conservative, and weren’t too crazy about my abstracts. However, they did like my garden paintings. Liked them a lot, in fact. And I reluctantly sold one while in Florida. I only did six paintings and really wanted to bring them all home to show in the gallery.

The following five paintings done in 2022 & 2023 are all of my gardens at Beaver Dam Farm in Pomquet - 71 Melanson Rd. -DIRECTIONS: From TCH heading East, take EXIT 35B left onto Pomquet Monk’s Head Rd. Go 1 km. and turn left onto Melanson Rd. There’s a Gallery sign.

Coming from the other direction on Taylors Rd., follow it to the T and turn right. Keep going past the church, over the railroad tracks to Melanson Rd. on your right. It’s last road before the TCH.

I’ve named these five paintings - OLD BARN GALLERY GARDENS and given them numbers 1 -5 . Problem is all the canvases are out being stretched and I can’t remember which is which. — So, if you want one, we’ll figure it out together.

Old Barn Gallery Gardens #5

28 x 31” acrylic on canvas. Pretty sure this is the last one I did this winter. I’ve put the old barn in each painting. It’s a wonder and needs to be shown. Built in 1845 this incredible building should be on the national register of historic buildings in homage and testament to the men who built it almost 200 years ago. Think about it. Better still, come visit and we’ll show it to you. It’s truly amazing!

I used it for years as my art gallery and whenever a couple would show up, the woman perused the art, and the husband couldn’t take his eyes of the soaring structure. “Awesome” was the most heard comment.

Old Barn Gallery Gardens #2

This one is also 28” x 31” acrylic on canvas. A bit different mood, I think. The colors deeper and the sky a big stormy It’s a frontal shot of the old barn as seen from the terrace of our Art Galleries. The dirt road that’s running past the barn going up hill to the highest point on the farm which overlooks Pomquet Harbour and beyond.

Old Barn Gallery Gardens #1

28 x 31 acrylic on canvas. This was my first garden painting during the winter. It may be m favorite. The reference photo was one I took off my screened porch and focused on some dying daisies in a vase with white flowering bushes out in the yard. Friends thought I was a bit nuts to like fading flowers, but I do . . . . In all stages of their demise.

Old Barn Gallery Gardens

28” x 31” acrylic on canvas This one really gives an impression of Beaver Dam Farm in full summer glory. Masses of flowers (more every year) everywhere you look. For those who love the country life and appreciate the glories of Nova Scotia, I think this painting captures the emotion of all that.

This painting was done in the winter of 2022, last year. It’s part of a big series I did called “The Fat Bottomed Girls” I think they remain my favorites.

OLD NEWS!

New for the Winter of our Discontent (just kidding sort of)

GALLERIE AU SOUS SOL”

This is what we did the during Covid 2021

Old Barn Gallery in the Basement

Because of COVID, I’m staying put on my farm in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I’m having a great time decorator the holidays and preparing for a winter. This will be my first winter in a cold climate for 15 years.

Well . . . things have changed since I updated my site. The above gallery worked well for me during the winter of 2020, but Spring arrived and Rodney and I moved all our art to our main galleries. Bottom Line is “Gallerie au Sous Sol” is not currently being used. We’ll see about the coming winter . . . .

How and WHY we did it . . . . Rodney needed a place to winter store all his fabulous wildlife photography. The old barn loft was not suitable because of winter dampness. . . . . I needed a place to paint during times when I couldn’t get up to my normal studio in the Stable Gallery. So, I thought of the truly UGLY, but spacious CELLAR in my house (the Charming Cottage) - First I asked Rodney to create a work space for me, and that led to gallery space for my art, and that led to even more gallery and storage space for Rodney’s art. So, Rodney put up weathered barn boards (former horse fencing) on some walls and plywood on others. I painted the walls that needed paint, and then the floors. And, “Voila”, all of a sudden, we had an expansive and beautiful gallery space for two artists.

With COVID, most artists are now selling on-line. I starting doing that during the summer and it went well, so I’m hoping to encourage more people to think of buying on-line. — You know, when I was in the Fjord Horse business for 30+ years, most of my sales were done with the aid of video (VHS) tapes. A whole lot of people from Newfoundland to California bought $15,000 horses strictly on the basis of a homemade tape. I had a reputation for quality, healthy, well-trained Fjord Horses, and people trusted me and the process. — Both Rodney and I are dedicated to our art, and to giving our customers quality work and service.

Beaver Dam Farms located in Pomquet, Nova Scotia is host to Old Barn Gallery & Gardens. This beautiful gallery and boutique is located in a former horse stable on a piece of 300 acre land. The farm and gallery is owned and operated by contemporary abstract painter Carol 'Naveta' Rivoire

Our Gallerie au Sous Sol is not in use at this time. Things change!

We’re keeping the space as it is/was to be able to use it in the

future if needs require

So, that brings me to Season # 11 of Old Barn Gallery and Gardens -

And there have been changes . . . . .

Rodney’s Art and his Gallery -

Big news re Rodney’s art - his Wildlife Photography, is that he was recognized by the St. Francis Xavier Art Department, and given a fabulous One Man Show for 2 whole months in the fall of 2021. It was a phenomenal success and resulted in a lot of sales for Rodney.

Now, it’s Spring of 2022, and both Rodney and I are just about ready to show our new work (and NEW LOOK in the galleries) to all our loyal fans and visitors. We still have our small Antique Shop, but it’s no longer in the hay loft of the 1845 barn. Still in the old barn, but consolidated on the first level. We have a good selection of antique quilts, hooked rugs, and various country antiques

Probably the biggest NEWS is our ARTMOBILE which is creating

a stir around Antigonish - Hope you think it’s fun .

This is just a portion of my part of our new Gallerie au Sous Sol (art in the cellar) . . . . OLD NEWS . . . It’s now the summer of 2022, and all my art and Rodney’s art is moved up to our summer quarters - THE STABLE GALLER for Carol Naveta’s art, and THE CARRIAGE HOUSE GALLERY for Rodney’s wildlife photography.
